Quick answer: Christmas does not turn Slade Czech into a factory. Every collar, leash and belt is still cut, stitched and checked by hand in our Czech workshop, one piece at a time. December just means a longer line. Made-to-order pieces usually take 3 to 5 business days to build, plus shipping to the US. Short on time, or no idea how big the dog's neck is? A gift card is the safe play.

It is 7:30 a.m. in the Czech Republic, which means most of our American customers are still asleep. Their orders are not. The bench already has a stack of order slips about as tall as a well-fed pit bull. A red collar with yellow stitching. A "same as last year, but cooler" request. A dog named something that looks like a Wi-Fi password. Every single one has to come out right.

That is the holiday rush in a real saddler's workshop. No assembly line, no warehouse of identical boxes. Just hands, tools, leather and a calendar that somehow loses a day every time you check it. Here is what actually happens behind the scenes, what slows down a Christmas order, and how to get your gift here on time and in the right size.

Inside a December day at the bench

Handmade does not speed up in December. It just stacks up. Same steps, more reps, more coffee. If you want the full breakdown, read why every collar from our workshop takes so long. In December, that whole process runs on a loop.

Morning: orders get read like case files

Every piece starts with reading the order. Leather color, thread color, hardware finish, width, neck size, custom text. Boring? Sure. It is also the most important ten minutes of the whole build. A collar cut to the wrong number is not a "small oops". It is a strip of good leather that will never fit any dog, anywhere.

When something looks off, like a neck size that does not match the breed or a name that smells like a typo, we email the customer before we cut. In December those emails go out nonstop. Nobody loves getting them. They save a lot of Christmas mornings.

Midday: color goes wild

Holiday buyers get bold. Black and brown get company from red, green, night blue and combos loud enough to stop traffic. The bench turns into a paint swatch wall. By the fourth red collar of the day, you can practically see the Christmas card photos.

Afternoon: stitching, rivets and the half-second test

Then comes the work that does not care what month it is. Leather gets shaped, holes punched, stitching pulled tight, hardware set. Every piece is built for the half-second a strong dog hits the end of the leash chasing a squirrel. Christmas does not change physics. A collar that looks amazing under the tree and fails on the first icy sidewalk is not a gift. It is a problem with a bow on top.

Evening: one more check, then the envelope

Nothing ships until it is checked again: size, spelling, stitching, hardware. If a piece falls short, we make it again, even when that costs a day we do not have. Then it goes into an envelope with a signed authenticity note and heads out by post or courier. Want the full trip? Read made to order: from click to doorstep.

Since 2004, this bench has turned out more than 20,000 handmade pieces for dogs in 30-plus countries. In December you feel every one of those numbers, mostly in your fingertips. Nobody here wishes for a machine that does it faster. We just wish everyone measured the dog before ordering.

What actually slows down a holiday order

Straight answer: it is almost never the stitching. It is missing or fuzzy info. These four show up every December.

A neck size that is really a guess

Guessing is delay number one. "Medium-ish" is not a measurement. Neither is a tape wrapped over a fluffy winter coat or cinched like a tourniquet. The giveaway: the number does not fit the dog's breed or weight, so we have to ask. Use our guide to measuring your dog for a classic collar. Tape around the middle of the neck, one or two fingers underneath, and the collar lands on the middle hole.

Custom text nobody proofread

A name plate or a custom handle is the best part of the gift, and the easiest place to mess up. Typos, a missing digit in a phone number, a nickname that only makes sense when yelled across a dog park. We catch what we can, but we cannot know that "Bruiser" was supposed to be "Brewser".

The color debate that never ends

Changing your mind is fine. Changing it after the leather is cut is not. If you are stuck between two colors, settle it before you hit order. Our workshop can do plenty. Time travel is not on the list.

Waiting until the last week

Building takes days. Shipping across the Atlantic takes more, and in December carriers are slammed with their own holiday rush on top of ours. Build in a real buffer. The later you order, the smarter a gift card starts to look.

How to order a holiday gift without the panic

  1. Measure the dog today. Not the old collar, not a breed chart, the actual dog. Write the number down.
  2. Lock in colors and hardware in one go. Leather, thread, finish. Screenshot it so you do not forget.
  3. Proofread the text twice. Type it, then read it out loud. Names, numbers and dates deserve a second look.
  4. Count backward. 3 to 5 business days to build, plus international shipping, plus a holiday buffer for slammed carriers.
  5. Not sure? Email us before you order. One question up front beats a week of back-and-forth.

Gift ideas for real situations

A good gift fixes a real problem, not just an empty spot under the tree. These three cover the situations we hear about most.

You don't know the size: a gift card

The Slade Czech gift card in any amount lets the recipient pick the piece, the size and the color. It is good for 12 months on any product on the site, and if the order costs less, the rest stays on the card until it expires. It is the right call when measuring the dog would blow the surprise. The catch: there is nothing to unwrap on Christmas morning, so add a note about what you had in mind.

You want it personal: a collar with a name plate

The Renegade leather collar with a custom name plate is made to measure, with up to three lines of text on the metal plate: a name, a phone number, a short line that means something. It is built for strong dogs, in 1, 1.3 or 1.6 inch widths with heavy-duty hardware. It needs an exact neck size, so skip it for a secret gift you cannot measure.

Strong dog, tired hands: a heavy leash

The Goliash heavy leather leash with custom handle text is cut from 4 mm cowhide, 0.75 inch wide, with brass cubes and a massive brass snap, in 24, 36 or 48 inch lengths. Put your own text on the handle and it is no longer just a leash. The big win for gift-giving: no neck size needed. It gives a better grip on a strong puller. It will not teach the dog to stop pulling.

Gift cheat sheet

  • You know the exact neck size → a made-to-measure collar, ideally with a name plate.
  • You can't measure without giving it away → a leash, which needs no neck size, or a gift card.
  • The dog pulls like a tow truck → a heavy leash and a wide collar, plus some patient training in January.
  • The calendar is already tight → a gift card. It never shows up late.
  • You can't pick a color → gift card again. Let the person who walks the dog every day choose.

Holiday ordering mistakes we see every year

  • Measuring the old collar instead of the dog. Old collars stretch and dogs grow. Measure the dog.
  • Measuring over a thick winter coat, or way too tight. Either way, the collar sits wrong.
  • Ordering December 20 and crossing your fingers. Hope is not a shipping option.
  • Skipping the proofread. A typo on a name plate sticks around for years.
  • Buying off the photo alone. Looks great online, useless on an icy sidewalk. Match width and hardware to the dog's real strength.

When to email the workshop instead of guessing

Reach out before you order if the dog is still growing, if you are torn between a classic and a half-check collar, if the measurement does not fit the breed, or if you want a custom combo. A quick note to info@sladeczech.com takes two minutes. The wrong size in December can cost you the whole surprise.

FAQ

How long does a handmade Slade Czech order take?

Made-to-order pieces are usually ready in 3 to 5 business days, depending on complexity and order volume. Special custom work can take longer. Shipping time to the US comes on top.

What's a good gift if I don't know the dog's collar size?

A gift card or a leash. A leash needs no neck size, and a gift card lets the recipient choose the piece, size and color themselves.

How long is a Slade Czech gift card good for?

The gift card is valid for 12 months on any product on the site. If the order costs less, the remaining balance stays on the card until it expires.

Can I put a name or custom text on a collar or leash?

Yes. Some collars, like the Renegade, come with a metal name plate with your text, and leashes like the Goliash can carry custom text on the handle. Proofread carefully before you order.

How do I measure my dog's neck without spoiling the surprise?

Ask whoever walks the dog every day to measure the middle of the neck with a soft tape, one or two fingers underneath. If a secret measurement is impossible, go with a leash or a gift card.

What happens if you spot a mistake in my order?

We check color, size and spelling before we cut. If something looks off, we contact you first. It might add a day, but it saves the gift.

Give a gift that holds

December in the workshop is loud, busy and smells like leather. The work itself does not change: every piece is still built to hold in the half-second that counts. Send us an accurate measurement, proofread text and a little lead time, and your gift will be ready for the first winter walk. Running out of time, or the neck size is a mystery? Our Slade Czech gift cards are the one gift that never misses the deadline.
