Short answer: In December, every Slade Czech collar, lead and belt is still cut, stitched and checked by hand, one piece at a time, just with a much longer queue. A made-to-order piece usually takes 3–5 working days in the workshop, plus delivery to your country. If your calendar is already tight or you do not know the dog's neck size, a gift voucher is the safe bet.

Early December, half past seven in the morning. The workshop smells of leather, beeswax and coffee that went cold an hour ago. On the bench lies a stack of order slips the height of a well-fed Staffy. One wants a red collar with yellow stitching. The next wants "exactly the same, but different". The third has a dog's name with two letters nobody in the room can pronounce, and every one of them has to come out right.

This is what the pre-Christmas rush looks like in a saddler's workshop. No conveyor belt, no warehouse full of identical boxes. Just hands, tools, leather and a calendar that seems to lose a day every time you look at it. Here is how it really works, what slows a Christmas order down, and how to make sure your gift arrives on time and fits.

A December day at the bench

Handmade does not get faster because it is December. It gets busier. The steps stay the same, they just happen more often and with more coffee. We wrote about the whole process in why every collar from our workshop takes so long. In December, the same steps simply run on repeat.

Morning: reading the orders like detective files

Every order starts with reading. Colour of leather, colour of stitching, hardware finish, width, neck size, text. It sounds dull. It is the most important ten minutes of the whole piece. A collar cut to the wrong number is not a "small mistake". It is a strip of good leather that will never fit anyone's dog.

When something looks odd, a neck size that does not match the breed, a name that might be a typo, we write to the customer before we cut. In December those emails fly out like confetti. Nobody enjoys them, but they save gifts.

Midday: the colour parade

Around Christmas, people get braver with colour. Black and brown are joined by red, green, night blue and combinations that would make a traffic light jealous. Our bench turns into a paint chart. Somewhere between the third red collar and the fifth natural one, you start to understand which dogs will be photographed under which tree.

Afternoon: stitching, rivets and the half-second test

Then the work that does not care about the season. Leather is shaped, holes punched, stitching pulled tight, hardware fixed. Every piece is built for the half-second when a strong dog hits the end of the lead after a pigeon. Christmas does not change physics. A collar that looks good under the tree but opens on the first icy walk is not a gift. It is a problem with a bow on it.

Evening: the final check and the envelope

Before anything leaves, it is checked again: size, spelling, stitching, hardware. If a piece does not meet the standard, it gets made again, even if that costs a day we do not have. Then it goes into the envelope with a signed authenticity note and heads off by post or courier. You can follow the whole route in our article made to order: from click to doorstep.

Since 2004, this bench has turned out more than 20,000 handmade pieces for dogs in over 30 countries. In December you feel every one of those numbers, mostly in your fingers. Nobody here dreams of a machine that would do it faster. We just dream of customers who measure the dog before ordering.

What really slows a Christmas order down

The honest answer: the stitching is rarely the bottleneck. Missing or unclear information is. These are the four situations we see most often in December.

A neck size that is a guess

A guessed size is the number one delay. "Medium, I think" is not a measurement. Neither is a tape wrapped over a thick winter coat or pulled tight like a tourniquet. The tell-tale sign: the number does not match the dog's breed or weight, so we have to ask. Use our guide to measuring your dog for a classic collar: tape around the middle of the neck, one or two fingers underneath, and the collar will land on the middle hole.

Text that nobody double-checked

A personalised plate or handle is the best part of the gift and the easiest place to make a mistake. Typos, a missing phone digit, or a nickname that only works when shouted across a park. We check what we can, but we cannot know that "Rocky" was meant to be "Rocco".

The colour decision that never ends

Changing your mind is fine. Changing it after the leather has been cut is a different story. If you are torn between two colours, decide before you order. Our workshop is many things, but a time machine is not one of them.

Leaving it to the last week

Production takes days, delivery takes more. In December, post and couriers carry their own Christmas rush on top of ours. If the gift has to cross borders, add a real buffer. The later the order, the more a gift voucher starts to look like genius.

How to order a Christmas gift without stress

  1. Measure the dog now. Not the old collar, not the breed chart, the actual dog. Write the number down.
  2. Decide colours and hardware in one go. Leather, stitching and finish. Screenshot your choice so you do not forget it.
  3. Type the text twice. Once to write it, once to read it aloud. Names, phone numbers and dates deserve a second look.
  4. Count backwards. 3–5 working days of production, plus delivery to your country, plus a December buffer for busy carriers.
  5. Not sure about something? Write to us before you order. One question in time saves a whole exchange of emails later.

Gift picks by situation

A good gift solves a real problem, not just a gap under the tree. These three cover the situations we hear about most.

When you do not know the size: a gift voucher

The Slade Czech gift voucher in any value lets the recipient choose the piece, size and colour themselves. It is valid for 12 months and can be used for any product on the site. If the order costs less, the remaining balance stays on the voucher until it expires. It is the right gift when you cannot measure the dog without ruining the surprise. It will not give the recipient something to unwrap and hold on Christmas Eve, so pair it with a note about what you had in mind.

When you want a personal touch: a collar with an engraved plate

The Renegade leather collar with a personalised name plate is made to measure, with up to three lines of text on the plate: a name, a phone number, a short line that means something. It suits strong dogs, with widths of 25, 32 or 40 mm and heavy-duty hardware. It needs an accurate neck size, so it is not the right choice for a secret gift you cannot measure.

When the dog is strong and the owner's hands are tired: a heavy lead

The Goliash heavy leather lead with custom handle text is cut from 4 mm cowhide, 19 mm wide, with brass cubes and a massive brass snap hook, in 61, 92 or 122 cm. Add your own text to the handle and it stops being just a lead. The big advantage for a gift: no neck size needed. It gives a better grip on a strong dog. It does not teach the dog to stop pulling.

Which gift is right? Quick decision guide

  • If you know the exact neck size → a made-to-measure collar, ideally with a personalised name plate.
  • If you cannot measure without spoiling the surprise → a lead, which needs no neck size, or a gift voucher.
  • If the dog pulls hard → a heavy lead and a wide collar, plus some patient training in the new year.
  • If the calendar is already tight → a gift voucher. It never arrives too late.
  • If you cannot decide between colours → the voucher again. Let the person who walks the dog every day choose.

Common Christmas ordering mistakes

  • Measuring the old collar instead of the dog. Old collars stretch, and dogs grow. The dog is the only reliable source.
  • Measuring over a thick winter coat or too tightly. Both give you a collar that sits wrong.
  • Ordering on 20 December and hoping. Hope is not a shipping method.
  • Skipping the text check. A typo on a name plate stays on that plate for years.
  • Choosing by photo alone. Pretty in the photo, useless on an icy pavement. Check the width and hardware for the dog's real strength.

When to write to the workshop instead of guessing

Write to us before ordering if the dog is still growing, if you are unsure between a classic and a half-check collar, if the measurement does not match the breed, or if you need a special combination. A short email to info@sladeczech.com costs you two minutes. A wrong size in December can cost you the whole surprise.

FAQ

How long does a handmade Slade Czech order take?

Made-to-order pieces are usually ready in 3–5 working days, depending on complexity and the number of orders. Special custom work can take longer. Delivery time to your country comes on top.

What is the best gift if I do not know the dog's collar size?

A gift voucher or a lead. A lead needs no neck size, and a voucher lets the recipient choose the piece, size and colour themselves.

How long is a Slade Czech gift voucher valid?

The gift voucher is valid for 12 months and can be used for any product on the site. If the order costs less, the remaining balance stays on the voucher until it expires.

Can I add a name or text to a collar or lead?

Yes. Some collars, such as the Renegade, have a metal name plate with your own text, and leads like the Goliash can carry custom text on the handle. Check the spelling carefully before you order.

How do I measure my dog for a collar without the dog noticing?

Ask someone who walks the dog every day to measure the middle of the neck with a tape, one or two fingers underneath. If a secret measurement is impossible, choose a lead or a gift voucher.

What happens if you notice a mistake in my order?

We check colour, size and spelling before cutting. If something looks wrong, we contact you first. That can add a day, but it saves the gift.

Order the gift that holds

December in the workshop is loud, busy and smells of leather. The work itself does not change: every piece is still made to hold in the half-second that counts. Give us accurate measurements, a checked text and a little time, and your gift will be ready for the first winter walk. Running short on time or not sure about the size? Our Slade Czech gift vouchers are the one gift that never misses the deadline.
